Osteopathic Treatment in Auckland

Helping you recover from injury and manage pain with hands-on care. Glenn Williams provides comprehensive osteopathic treatment for pain, sports injuries, and musculoskeletal conditions.

The purpose of Osteopathy

Osteopathy is an established, recognized system of diagnosis and treatment that focuses on how your musculoskeletal system - bones, muscles, joints, and ligaments - affects your overall health.

As an osteopath, I use many of the same diagnostic procedures as conventional medicine. What makes osteopathy unique is how I assess you from a mechanical, functional and postural perspective, then apply hands-on treatment methods tailored specifically to your needs.
The goal of osteopathic treatment is not just to manage your symptoms, but to identify and address the underlying causes of your problem.

What can I expect from osteopathy?

Osteopaths can treat a wide variety of conditions including:

  • Lower and upper back pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Joint pain
  • Headache and migraine
  • Sports injuries including tennis elbow
  • Disc injury
  • Sciatica
  • Pregnancy issues
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Childhood problems
  • Stress, depression and fatigue
  • Many other conditions

Treatment aims to restore function within the body, so that the natural processes of adaptation, compensation and resolution can once more take place effectively.

Osteopaths treat the whole person, not just the condition. Osteopaths use palpation (the use of their hands) to both investigate the underlying cause of pain and to carry out treatment using a variety of techniques.

This may include stretching techniques for muscle and connective tissue, soft tissue and joint mobilization, electrotherapy, massage, manipulation, cranial osteopathy, or even to fitting of orthotics.

The patient is encouraged to discuss treatment options and to participate in decision-making. Treatment may include patient ‘homework’. This may involve corrective and stretching exercises, postural awareness and appropriate nutritional advice. People may experience soreness for one to two days after treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about osteopathic treatment and what to expect during your visit.

  • What do I bring/wear?

Casual, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement—such as shorts, leggings, or trackpants with a light top.

  • Safety and side effects?

Osteopathy is generally safe and gentle when delivered by a registered practitioner. Most people feel easier movement and reduced pain after treatment. Mild, short‑lived effects can include soreness, fatigue, or a temporary flare for 24–48 hours—this is normal as your body adapts.

I tailor techniques to your condition, health history, and preferences, and I’ll explain risks and options before we begin. Please tell me if you’re pregnant, have osteoporosis, recent surgery, or serious medical conditions; I’ll modify care accordingly. If you ever experience unusual or persistent symptoms after a session, contact me promptly.

  • Appointment length?

Initial consultations are typically 30-45 mintues to cover a thorough history, examination, and treatment. Follow‑up sessions are usually 30 minutes, focused on hands‑on care, progress review, and updating your plan.

  • How many treatments will I need?

Most people see improvement within 2–4 sessions. Complex or long‑standing issues may need a short course over several weeks, with occasional maintenance. After your first visit, I’ll provide a tailored plan with expected timeframes and home advice.

  • What should I expect during my first visit?

Your initial consultation will include a detailed discussion about your health history and current concerns, followed by a physical examination. I’ll explain my findings and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
